Tetanus is a bacterium that lives in the gut of rudimentary animals like horses, pigs, and cows. It is also in their manure. When exposed to air, it dies. So, he would have to be in, say, a pig pen,….or cow pasture, step on a needle that was not exposed to air….like if it was in the middle of the manure, or buried under the dirt,….and if it bled at all, the tetanus would most likely flood out of the wound and be gone. Your sofa, unless you have a pig or cow, probably has as much chance of having tetanus bacterium on it as you have of having a horse in your living room. So, I would wash it well, and not worry about it. That said,…..research it a bit yourself,…..and I am sure others will chime in with even more and better information.

The most recent statistics available from the CDC are:
During 2001–2008, a total of 233 cases of Tetanus were reported from 45 states; 26 were fatal. 196 out of 233 were vaccinated, whether the unvaccinated were among the fatal cases is not recorded.

However, during 2001-2008, a total of 53470 injuries from a tetanus containing vaccine is on registry with the United States government database. 791 were fatal. https://vaers.hhs.gov/data/data
So….. in 8 years 26 died from tetanus and 791 died from a tetanus containing vaccine……..
